The Village of Hope Community Development Corporation has actively worked to reclaim the neighborhood of Roosevelt Village in Columbia, SC.
Roosevelt Village had been an area of drugs and crime, but in 1997 residents and volunteers from the Columbia Community at large took steps to change that situation.
Wesley United Methodist Church began outreach mission work in the area, and in 1997 Midlands Technical College secured a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service grant for the purpose of establishing a Family Center in a small block building donated by a community member.
The CDC now offers after school programs and tutoring, a computer lab, and literacy programs. At the request of community members, a sheriff's substation was located here in 1998. Truly this area of crime is becoming a Village of Hope.
In December, 2003 the CDC was able to purchase the existing apartment complex with a loan from Regions Bank. The ageing buildings will be replaced with new housing. Current residents will not be displaced and will have the first opportunity to purchase the new homes.
